Richard Alston
Richard Alston was born in Sussex in 1948. He began training at the London School of Contemporary Dance and then went on to choreograph for the London Contemporary Dance Theatre in advance forming the UKs first independent move come with Strider in 1972. In 1976, Alston went on to study at the Merce Cunningham Dance studio apartment in New York and just four years later on he was appointed resident choreographer with Ballet Rambert, becoming the companys artistic director from 1986 1992. Alstons work has a definite individuality about it, which is something I screw seeing within a dance piece, and I tactile property that the way in which he arrives at the studio with no preconceived structure of where to go within a dance piece is a very effective way of choreographing this is understandably highlighted within his work. Alston has a very distinctive style. Partly his stage dancing looks like Merce Cunningham with lots of curves and tilts in the body, along with detailed steps.
