Things Fall Apart Essay
In Things Fall Apart Chinua Achebe presents two fundamentally different characters donjon in a foreign culture. Through the use of counterpoint Okonkwo off of Obierika Achebe creates a rich character and better perceptiveness for the reader of Okonkwo.
One difference between Obierika and Okonkwo are their ideas of strength. Okonkwo believes that to limn emotion or bail is a sign of weakness. On the other hand, Obierika understands that a show of emotion or attachment does non necessarily equal strength. This can be seen when Obierika warns Okonkwo, You be very well, Okonkwo, that I am not afraid of declension and if anyone announces you that I am, he is telling a lie. And let me tell you one thing, my friend. If I were you I would seduce stayed at home. What you have done will not please the Earth. It is the kind of run for which the goddess wipes out whole families. (Achebe) In this way the reader is able-bodied to learn much more about Okonkwo.
Earlier in the story Okonkwo breaks the Week of Peace in Umoufia by trounce his third wife for not cooking dinner. In strain Obierika does not react so viscerally and let his emotions require him, instead he thinks carefully onward he acts. For sample Obierikas daughter is having her wedding.
Midway through the wedding a neighbors cow is loosed on Obierikas land disturbing the preparations for the wedding. Obierika does not react much to the entire ordeal and remains calm, just now making sure his wives were able to take care of the matter. here the reader sees to different reactions to upsets in daily routines and preparations further demonstrate how reactionary Okonkwo is.
Just as Obierika remains calm and thinks before he acts, he also thinks about the nature of laws and usance in his kin group and even questions them. Obierika discusses the law in his clan of tapping trees, and expresses his belief that the law is unnecessary.
