modernism: The American Dream Lost
modernness is defined as a parkway with bold new experimental styles and forms that swept the arts during the starting metre third of the twentieth century (Haffner 1128). As the period of contemporaneousness commenced, writers wanted to move away from Realist and Romanticist literature. They wrote about outrage of faith in the American Dream and spirit of disillusionment. Margaret Walker, for example, depicts her rime Let America Be America Again with elements of Modernism like sense of disillusionment. Her poem shows individuals who hope for a ingenuous dream of a better future but not being fulfilled yet. This literary movement was a answer to realism due to the great depression and World fight I. Writers during the movement of Modernism wrote responses to social conditions like racism and poverty. They gave a vivid image of how society changed over time. For example, writers wrote details and rendering of society fragmentation. The factors of Modernism changed American literature at that time period. Authors who rose during that time, like Zora Neale Hurston, wrote a novel showing sense of disillusionment and emphasis on bold experimentation in style and form just like in her novel, Their eyeball Were Watching God.
Through Zora Neal Hurstons characterization of Janie in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, it is clear that Modernism greatly impacts how the novel is written.
Just like most characters in Modern literature, Janie personifies the characteristic of tenderness under pressure. compassion under pressure means that an individual who faces hardships or struggles, persevering through it. In the novel, Janie remarries to a wealthy black man, Jody. In the beginning, he is kind to her but as time progresses he becomes controlling and gives Janie a hard time.
