Patientsâ€"and cancer-free control breath donorsâ€"exhaled 3 to 5 times into the tubes; then the experimenters capped both ends of the tubes and stored them in zip lock-type bags at room temperature until it was time for the dogs to snuffle them. Amazingly the dogs were able to distinguish the cancer. Weeks of training went by and they were entered into a double blind study where not even the trainers knew which individual had cancer and which didnt. This was to ensure that the dogs were not picking up baneful hints from the people while they were in the room. The results were insane. The dogs were able to detect breast cancer 88% of the time and lung cancer with 99% accuracy. It didnt seem to matter what kind of cancer or what coiffe the cancer was in either so this could mean an unbelievably early detection if used to the maximum potential.
