Only will, or objective truth during the cosmic sense, isn't subject to idea. Each will and notion is also compared to ideal forms or essence, the former due to the fact objective reality, which Schopenhauer describes as the thing-in-itself, is what remains once individual instances of forms are taken away; and also the latter simply because idea, as the result of subjective experience, is really ahead of experience. Schopenhauer differentiates among subjective experience or concept and will by way of the rational processes of human beings: "when the will is enlightened by knowledge, it often knows that it wills now and here, by no means what it wills in general." Ibid., 1089.

The conception of essence or thing-in-itself is critical to Schopenhauer's view of music simply because his discussion takes him for the position that music is even over an extraordinary example of type or will. For Schopenhauer, music becomes will itself, even because it allows to your infusion of will into individual instances of itself. The musical expression may be the expression of the subjective thought with the will. Like a item of rational man, it's unavoidably will inflected or conditioned by human experience, which means that somebody example of music belongs on the world. But the power of that expression is such that it reaches not merely beyond its greatest and best phenomen.

Music . . . in no way expresses the phenomenon, but only the inner nature, the in-itself of all phenomena, the will itself. It does not therefore express this or that specific and particular joy, this or that sorrow, or pain, or horror, or delight, or merriment, or peace of mind; but joy, sorrow, pain, horror, delight, merriment, peace of mind themselves, to a certain extent from the abstract, their important nature, with no accessories, and for that reason with out their motives. . . . Hence it arises that our imagination is so very easily excited by music, and now seeks to give form to that invisible yet actively moved spirit-world which speaks to us directly, and clothe it with flesh and blood.
